Are your Social Media Connections the Right Ones?
As social media continues to immerse our lives both personally and professionally, it is important to think about the ‘likes’, ‘followers’ or ‘connections’ you have in your social media platforms. In the business world we meet lots of people. If you want to make the most of social media professionally then thinking strategically is important.
Your network of people connects you potentially to a larger group of individuals. To a degree it doesn’t matter how many people you are connected to so long as those individuals are relevant to you professionally in some way.
Tips on How to be Strategic with Your Connections
Audit your Connections
A good place to start is by auditing your connections. Have a look at those in your networks and see what benefit they are bringing. Do you know them; have you networked or caught up with them to discover more about them? Why or why not?
Don’t Accept All Invites
On LinkedIn, for example there will always be people who only want to connect with you because it increases their numbers. They are actually not interested in getting to know what you do. You don’t have to accept all invitations so think before you accept.
Go Slow
Take your time in growing your connections. It is not actually all about quantity. It is the quality of connections that is more important. Spend some time working out who your ideal connection is and cultivate these types of individuals.
Inform, don’t sell
If you establish yourself as an information source, you place yourself in a better position to sell yourself in the long run. So provide information and content that is beneficial to your audience. This will do your selling for you.
Social media is not just about numbers. Relationship building with those in your networks and the quality of people you are connected to is more essential than the quantity of connections. So spend some time thinking about who you want to be connected with.
