Communicating with Social Media – Modern and Irritating?
A lot has been said, debated and written about social media. Not all of it positive. Some suggest that modern technologies are narcissistic which to a degree is very accurate. Have a look at any Facebook page and there is always an element of ‘me, me, me’. Others though believe social media is inclusive and positive as it allows people to connect and become part of a conversation where they may not previously being able to.
However, whether modern communication platforms are positive or negative really misses the point. It is clear that regardless of your thoughts and feelings about social media and whether you like it or not or agree with it or not, it is here and being used by millions around the world. It is the modern way of communicating. These technologies are here to stay and we must adapt to them and we will.
Communication now comes with us as mobile technology allows us to be connected wherever we go. One small device can be a phone, allows us to check our email and book a restaurant online all within minutes of each other wherever we are. This is a significant shift in communication as it transcends time and place and we don’t need to be in one particular location to communicate. As such mobile and social media technologies can be considered disruptive communication. They are always with us making it extremely difficult to switch off for some people.
Modern technologies arguably may challenge us in the sense that we are always connected. As we become more accustomed to the technologies it may feel like we have less time. All technology particularly when emerging feels intrusive to a degree, however, it is important to acknowledge that we actually do have control over how much technology we use. Just like you can switch off the TV when it becomes annoying you can also turn off your phone, stop your automatic Facebook messages and stop checking your emails.
Modern technology is only as irritating and frustrating as we allow it to be. We still have a choice as to how much we want to be involved. Yes, we all need to be on board however when it gets too much remember there is an ‘off’ button.
